Information: Petadolex Kapseln

aufgenommen (5, S. 59).

From 1972 to July 2009, butterbur extract in Petadolex capsules was taken by more than 1 million migraine patients.

The adaptation of the extract to the state of the art 20 years ago (from dichloromethane to CO2) has led to the formal refusal of the subsequent authorisation by the BfArM in Germany. Despite analytical comparability, the German authority considers the CO2 extract in Petadolex capsules to be a new active pharmaceutical agent and is demanding a completely new marketing authorisation for the medicinal product.

Since mid-July 2009, the medicinal product Petadolex capsules has no longer been available in Germany, although Petadolex is regarded as a recognised medical standard in migraine prevention.

The proprietary special butterbur extract has proven efficacious for migraine prophylaxis in two placebo-controlled clinical studies in adults and in an open study in children and adolescents (1-3) and has been investigated in numerous experimental and published studies (4). The guideline of the DGN (German Society of Neurology) has also included the special Petadolex butterbur extract in its recommendations (5, p.59).
